What happens during a Spanish Zambomba?
What happens during a Spanish Zambomba?

Some fires burn down buildings. Some burn their way into songs. In 1971 Deep Purple watched the Montreux Casino burn to the ground and turned the smoke into a masterpiece. December 2023, Olvera had its own Deep Purple Moment.

Calle Mercado was dressed for a cozy Christmas Zambomba...neighbors, carols, the smell of winter. All it needed was a bonfire. But the wood wouldn't catch. The flame sputtered, faded, refused to take. So someone, tired of waiting, reached for gasoline.

The fire didn't just light. It roared. It caught the wood, the air, the street...and Calle Mercado caught fire.

What was supposed to be a warm village gathering became literal rock history. No one planned a legend that day. But as the smoke rose over Olvera, it carried the same reckless, unforgettable spirit that once drifted over Lake Geneva.

So here's our own chapter. Not Montreux. Not 1971. Olvera, Calle Mercado, December 2023. Put your hands together. This is our version of "Smoke on the Water" :

We gathered down in Olvera

For Christmas songs and wine

The rain had soaked the firewood

But everything was fine

We tried to get the fire going

But nothing would ignite

Then somebody had an idea

And Calle Mercado caught alight!

Chorus:

Smoke in the village

Fire in the street

Zambomba in December

What a way to meet!
